Overview of the project

The New University Hospital in Stavanger is situated at Ullandhaug in Norway. The close proximity to the University of Stavanger is viewed positively by both students and patients. Phase one is scheduled for completion in 2024 and covers an area of 200 000 m² with a budget of 11.2 billion NOK.

The complex architecture of the hospital includes patient rooms, outpatient rooms, laboratories, operating theaters, radiation and intervention rooms, emergency rooms, intensive care, premature rooms, and auditoriums. There was a focus on a compact solution, allowing for movement between the buildings via bridges on the second and third floors.

Navigating the challenges

Large-scale project
Managing a project spanning an area of 200 000 m² presented significant challenges in terms of overview, organization, and execution. Large projects also involve multiple teams, departments, and organizations.

Integration of new technologies and methods
Introducing new technologies or construction methods to increase efficiency requires significant changes in current practices. Training personnel, adapting existing processes, and integrating these changes into current workflows is complex and time-consuming.

Omega 365’s role in the project

The New University Hospital adopted the Omega 365’s systems in 2015. The project encouraged local companies to bid for contracts. It was during this period that Project Director Kari Gro Johanson, who was already familiar with Omega 365 from previous projects in the oil and gas sector, invited Omega 365 to tender. Subsequently, Omega 365 secured the contract in 2015.

“We have taken all the modules from Omega 365’s solution on board,” said Johanson.

Omega 365 assisted with the organization and overview of the New University Hospital project. From logging variation order requests and technical deviations to tracking orders, everything was integrated into the system. This promoted a unified workflow, with all reporting taking place within Omega 365.

One key addition to the system was the module Building Information Modeling (BIM), which provided a comprehensive tool for the operational phase of the project.

Johanson elaborated, “We also utilize the Completion module, and last but not least, the Meeting module, including all related actions. When team members open this tool, they see what’s important for the week. Everyone has their own personal site where they can add the modules that best suit their needs.”

Another essential requirement of the project was following the Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) standards. This focus was particularly influenced by team members with backgrounds in the oil and gas industry.

Johanson explained, “While some people from the construction industry might not be used to such rigid HSE requirements, for us it is paramount that everyone returns home from work safely.”

Omega 365’s involvement in the project highlights the software’s adaptability and ability to manage complex projects. Its role as a unified project management platform was intended to make the workflow more efficient. The goal was to simplify reporting processes and support a culture of safety and compliance within the project.
